It is an honor to be the Technical Editor of this first all-technology issue of JSS eEdition. It's also a tremendous - and microcosmic - learning experience.
Indeed, the "small is large" conundrum has been fascinating throughout this adventure. For example, when our graphic artist was tasked with doing her first
illustration for this e-issue, she was puzzled by the size requirement of 150 x 150 pixels. "But that's tiny!" she said. Indeed it is, as are most Web graphics, but
the wonder of technology makes it appear as a normal size on your screen. Similarly, with the click of the mouse, you can change the type size to include more text per line,
or enlarge it to easily be read by those of us with (to put it kindly) middle-aged eyes. Try doing that with the printed page! What's even more amazing is that, as I write
these words, I can change them, re-upload them, and have the new ones instantly read by someone on the other side of the world.
What could be smaller than the bits and bytes that make up this landmark publication? And what could be larger than the tremendous impact that electronic
publishing could have on the future of system safety? The possibilities are overwhelming, in the finest - and the largest - detail.
An American icon, Walt Disney, popularized the heart-warming lyrics "It's a small world, after all." Welcome to the new frontier!
