I am pleased to report that this year's International System Safety Conference in beautiful Minneapolis, Minnesota will be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3, 2010 (http://www.issc2010.org/).

A wonderful technical program is shaping up, sure to provide training for all — from the novice to the expert. The world of system safety engineering is continually evolving, and attending at the ISSC is a great way for individuals to get state-of-the-art training, stay abreast of new system safety trends and see new vendor tools. The ISSC makes system safety professionals more effective and efficient.

The following is just a sample of the many tutorials on various subjects that will be offered:

  • Applying Java to Safety-Critical Development
  • Noise and Toxic Exposures with Weapon Systems
  • System Safety 101
  • Safety Management Systems, Bridging Aviation and Nuclear Power Industries Compared
  • Safety-Critical Autocode Methodology
  • Product System Safety — Legal Duties and Liabilities
  • Assurance-Based Safety for System of Systems
  • System Safety Challenges in Ship Systems
  • Integration of Health Hazard Management Into the System Safety Process
  • Introduction to Software Safety
  • Software Safety Evidence
  • Functional Safety in the Commercial and Industrial Setting
  • FMEA, the Holistic Approach to Reliability and Safety
The instructors for these tutorials are subject matter experts from across the globe. Additionally, there will be dozens of papers, offering an equally diverse and rich educational benefit.

Minneapolis is a beautiful city, with many cultural activities that are there for your family to enjoy as well while you are making yourself into a more competent and well-rounded system safety professional. Also, if you are a baseball fan, the Twins are in town all week, including a series against their division rivals — the Detroit Tigers. I know I will personally take in at least one night at the ballpark.

Minnesota is also known as an outdoor playground, with fishing, hiking, golfing, etc., all nearby and accessible. The Conference ends on the Friday of Labor Day weekend and the trip could easily be turned into an extended mini-vacation by staying over for the weekend.

Additionally, the G48 Committee will also conduct a meeting, and all are encouraged to sit in and learn the new trends from all service representatives regarding new standards, boards, etc. The meeting is open to all.

Networking is also a secondary reason to attend the ISSC, as many of your customers, sub-contractors, primes, vendors, etc. will be there and accessible in a nice, relaxed environment. I'm looking forward to seeing you all there!
