Society Sponsoring Hong Kong Conference
Through the hard work of its members and Chapter President Onn Eng Ling, the Singapore Chapter is taking the lead in co-sponsoring the 2005 Asia-Pacific Conference on Risk Management and Safety, to be held in Hong Kong on December 1-2, 2005.

The system safety discipline is having an impact and making quite an impression on engineering professionals in East Asia. At the recent International System Safety Conference in Providence, Rhode Island, we had a very large representation from Asian countries, including China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, and 26 professionals from Singapore.

Plans for Our Conference in San Diego
Just in case you hadn’t heard, our annual Conference is being held in San Diego this August 22-26. We’ve arranged for another blockbuster location and hotel, the Westin Horton Plaza, which is located in downtown San Diego next to the Horton Plaza (of course) and the gas-lamp district. In addition, the new Padres ballpark is located within walking distance, although there’s no guarantee that any home games will be played during the Conference week. We’ll keep you informed as the Major League Baseball schedule comes out.

Right now, the most critical milestone is the Call for Papers, with abstracts due February 28, 2005. If you have an idea but are unsure whether to pursue it, contact Clif Ericson, the Technical Program Chair, and discuss your topic.

More information on the Conference can be found by clicking on the Conference logo on the Society’s home page (www.system-safety.org).

Society Elections are Approaching Once Again
Every two years, we conduct international elections to select a new batch of officers and half of our directors. In the next (print) issue of JSS, you will find a listing of the candidates, a striking picture of each, and a little about their background. My heartfelt thanks to Clif Ericson, Past President, for heading up the nominating committee.

These candidates have offered to serve two- or four-year terms, depending on the position. Please show your support by voting.
