Bay Area Chapter

The Bay Area Chapter held a general membership meeting via conference call on Monday, May 14, 2007. New President Dave Adams welcomed the members, succeeding Mike Jeung-Wesoloski who retired as Chapter president late last year. Discussion topics included Society election voting, scheduling Chapter elections and future Chapter meetings.

Georgia Chapter

The Georgia Chapter held a membership drive meeting at Lockheed Martin in Marietta, Georgia, on May 24, 2007. The meeting covered upcoming 2008 membership dues, reclaiming former Society members, recruiting new members, a possible Society plant Tour of MARTA, Georgia Power, Atlanta TRACON or Coca-Cola, and creating Georgia Chapter Society polo and T-shirts. A Society technical session is also scheduled for June 21 at Lockheed Martin (a call-in number for off-site members will be provided). Planned points of discussion include system safety, software safety, new architectures, and Full Authority Digital Engine Control fault detection and accommodation.

Sierra High Desert Chapter

The Sierra High Desert Chapter congratulates John Leipper for his upgrade to Fellow Member of the System Safety Society.

A Chapter meeting was held at Nickoletti's Restaurant on April 18 in Ridgecrest, California. During the meeting, Chapter President Dave Sweitzer proposed an investigation of short-term investment options for a portion of Chapter funds such as a money market account or staggered short-term CDs. This motion was seconded and will move to a full Chapter vote. In addition, Chapter Conference participation was encouraged, and information about the upcoming ISSC was shared. Jerry Banister was honored with a 45-Year Career Service Award from the Secretary of the Navy, and Ken Chirkis presented Jerry with the Naval Air Warfare Center's appreciation plaque.

Southern California Chapter

The Executive Council voted to approve the re-activation of the Southern California Chapter on April 6, 2007. This marks a System Safety Society milestone of 20 active chapters.

Congratulations to the Southern California Chapter Re-activation Steering Committee and the following newly elected Chapter officers:

President, Ron Welch; vice president, Steve Greenberg; treasurer, Gregg Ellers; secretary, Karen Moran; and past president, Rubin Moran.

The Chapter held a meeting at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, on Thursday, May 31. At this meeting, Chapter officers signed the new Chapter Charter and discussed plans for the coming year. A tour was conducted for those interested in seeing some of the JPL test and assembly areas.

Tennessee Valley Chapter

The Chapter's January, 2007, meeting was held at SAIC's Corporate Drive Facility. Twenty members and guests were present. The main speaker, John Livingston, long-time TVC member and Society Executive Secretary, presented, "Contributors to Human Error, An Important but Often Neglected Part of System Safety Analysis."

On Jan. 20, 2007, Chapter members Jim Blanteno and Don Swallom provided TVC support to the Alabama Regional Future City Competition held at the University of Alabama Huntsville University Center Exhibit Hall. The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for seventh- and eighth-grade students. The program combined a stimulating engineering challenge with a hands-on application to present their vision of a city of the future. The Chapter sponsored the "Best Use of Symbiotic Safety" Award, with Blanteno and Swallom serving as judges of which team did the best job of incorporating safety into the design of their future city. The winner of this award was Hampton Cove Middle School of Huntsville, Alabama, with their city named "Sundar." Team members were Kaval Mann, Sarah Campbell and Smyly Crawford. Their teacher is Ms. Vicky Lanza and their engineer mentor was Mr. Randy Mann.

The Chapter's February meeting was held at the Jacobs Sverdrup Conference Center in Huntsville. Twelve members heard Steve Hosner of Westar Aerospace & Defense Group present the "Roles and Responsibilities of System Safety Engineering and System Engineering in Weapon System Acquisition."

Winners Circle Chapter

The Winners Circle Chapter Executive Committee continued to meet monthly via telephone, and held a face-to-face meeting in April at Buckhead's, a local restaurant. Ballots for the 2007 - 2008 WCC election of Chapter officers were mailed in May. The annual meeting and announcement of election results is planned for June 14.
