Optimized Manning
Through Human-Centered Design
Presented by:
Jim Pharmer, Research Psychologist
Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division,
Orlando, Florida
Jim Pharmer will provide an overview of a project, which researches human factors concepts, human performance modeling, and human-centered design as a means to optimize the manning levels of future naval systems. He will discuss the research that he is conducting with advanced watchstations for combat information centers. These watchstations incorporate multiple display and control modalities, ergonomic considerations, and task-centric design to assist warfighters in performing their jobs. His research focuses on assessing whether smaller teams can perform the same tasks that current teams do when systems like this are designed with the human in mind at the earliest stages of design.
Jim Pharmer holds a M.S. in Engineering Psychology from Florida Institute of Technology and is a doctoral candidate in Human Factors Psychology program at the University of Central Florida.
