Perspecta: Taking Information Organization to the Next Level
By David Hill
Traditionally, the most effective way to access information has been through a domain expert; someone intimately knowledgeable about a subject. For example, some domain experts that we are all familiar with are travel agents, librarians, stockbrokers, tax accountants, and customer service representatives.  Typically, when we have complex questions or are unsure of the best approach to finding answers, or when we don't even know the questions to ask in the first place, we consult domain experts.  Today however, more people are turning to freely available information sources, such as the World Wide Web, and other large data storehouses.  Information access is moving toward a "self-service" model, and the domain expert is slowly being removed.  As a consequence, the size of the information market has broadened, while the quality of the information has declined.  This phenomenon is a challenge to both information providers, and the users of the information.

Enter Perspecta, a company whose vision is to create a system that captures and amplifies the knowledge of domain experts, and effectively provides that information to the world at large.  Perspecta was founded by a collection of prominent M.I.T. Media Lab alumnus, including Earl Rennison, Lisa Strausfield, Steven Holtzmann, Nicolas Saint-Arnaud, and Nicholas Negropointe, the founder and director of the M.I.T. Media lab.  Their work has been published in numerous design and technology journals, including Wired, ID, and as independent volumes, such as Holtzman's Digital Mantras, a critically acclaimed philosophy of creativity for the information age.
