LASER SAFETY: STANDARDS AND THE APPLICATION OF SYSTEM SAFETY
We are pleased to announce a two part presentation on laser safety. The first half of the presentation will be on laser safety standards. Mr. Wes Marshall of the U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventative Medicine (CHPPM) will discuss the status of current laser safety standards as well as his perspective on the future of U.S. and international laser safety standards. Mr. Marshall is one of the Army’s preiminent experts on laser safety. He evaluates many of the laser systems developed for the Army and establishes safety controls suitable for their use. Mr. Marshall is also the chairman of ANSI Z136.6 Comittee for outdoor laser safety.
The second half of the meeting will be presented by our own FL SSS member Mr. Frank Zelesky, PE, CSP. Mr. Zelesky will discuss the application of system safety during laser system development and how system safety techniques can offer an improvement over a strictly compliance based approach to hazard mitigation. Mr. Zelesky is a system safety consultant with many years experience practicing system safety on both military and commericial products. Mr. Zelesky has recent experience working on laser systems and will convey some of his experiences to the audience.
Several invitations have been extended to companies in the area involved in laser technology. We expect the meeting to raise some interesting discussions in this exciting topic. In addition, a short synopsis of our progress towards planning the 1999 International System Safety Conference will be given. Chapter office elections will also take place.

T he 15th International System Safety Conference will be held August 13-17, 1997 at the Park Hyatt in Washington, D.C. Fliers have gone out anouncing more of the details as they come together. The preliminary schedule of presentations indicates some 87 papers spread out over 4 days. For those of you that have seen the schedule, you will agree that there are some interesting topics. The guest speakers have also been announced: Rear Admiral Wayne Meyer(USNavy, Ret), Christopher Hart(FAA), Dr Anthony Cant(DTSO, Austrailia), and Charles Huettner(NASA). It will be interesting to hear what these folks have to say. Also, the Hyatt has had some suites open up, so if you missed out on the free room upgrade, you might want to look into this “sweet” bonus.

Chapter elections will be held at our meeting on June 18. Elected positions include President, President-Elect, Secretary, and Treasurer. Appointed positions include membership chairman, newsletter editior, and webmaster. Of course, the President position is actually a President-Elect slot, which includes Program Chair duties. Right now, John Wolf is President. Mike Willoughby currently holds the President-Elect position and has been in charge of programs. Mike slides into the President position, and the next President-Elect takes over as Program Chair until it is his turn to be President. You get the idea. The current slate of officer nominations is as follows: President - Mike Willoughby President Elect - Mike Kochmann Secretary and Newsletter Editor - John Wolf Treasurer - Fred Wachsman
Biographical Info:
Mike Willoughby is a safety engineer for the U.S. Army Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation Command (STRICOM) in Orlando. He manages system safety activities for various training and instrumentation programs managed by STRICOM. He has over eight years of safety experience working for the Army and is a CSP.
Mike Kochmann does safety engineering for Nations, Inc. in Orlando. He holds the ASP designation, a B.S. in Industrial Engineering, and is currently working towards a M.S degree in Engineering Management. His experience includes a tour at Kennedy Space Center, Florida, as well as his current postion of supporting STRICOM on system safety issues related to the Close Combat Tactical Trainer. His past involvment with FLSSS includes two years as newsletter editor and one year as membership chair. Mike is also the chapter’s webmaster, responsible for our internet presence.
Fred Wachmann is the president of ERIF SALES COMPANY, INC. His firm specializes in engineered systems for gas detection, portable instruments for detection and analysis of the environment and respiratory protective equipment. Fred has held numerous positions related to the development and sales of state-of-the-art instrumentation in the aerospace, biomedical, safety, and nuclear fields.
John Wolf is currently the president of the FL SSS. John wishes to continue to support the chapter and desired to do so as the secretary and newsletter editior. John works for CH&A Corporation. He also teaches system safety classes at Emery Riddle University.
Additional nominations and write-in candidate will be accepted up until conclusion of the June 18 meeting. Please contact Mike Willoughby if you are interested in any of the appointed positions. Membership chairman is available. Keep in mind that not only does holding a position in the chapter provide great exposure among your peers, it gives you the opportunity to help mold an organization with a bright future. Having your name affiliated with organizing an international conference, for example, is an immense networking opportunity. Another thing to remember is that being an officer counts for CSP continuance of certification points.
P lease welcome a new SSS Sustaining member in our area, Marvin Becker, at SRS Technologies, Titusville.

Long story, but here's the short version: Chuck Dorney has announced another turn of events in the evolution of our bible, MIL-STD-882. Aparently, the latest revision, -882D, didn't meet acquisition reform standards and has been turned over to an off-base contractor who specializes in re-writing standards so that they pass muster. Don't expect a new -882D until the end of the calendar year. Meanwhile MIL-STD-882C is still a valid document.
