International System Safety Conference
$1500 Travel Bursaries for Full-time Students
Full-time students involved in university research are invited to apply for a $1,500 (Canadian dollars) bursary towards reimbursement of travel expenses for participation in the 26th Annual International System Safety Conference, http://www.system-safety.org/~issc2008/, to be held 25-29 August 2008 in Vancouver, Canada.
This conference is expected to attract about 400 participants with representation from a variety of fields including aerospace, medical devices, defense, rail, energy and health care. In keeping with this year's theme, "The Next Generation of System Safety Professionals", we are making a special effort to ensure that this event is as rewarding as possible for students.
We expect to award as many as nine bursaries to eligible students. These bursaries will be awarded to full-time students currently (at the time of application) involved in university research at either the senior undergraduate or graduate level. This research must address a topic with a clear relevance to the discipline of system safety.
To be considered for one of these bursaries, a student must:
- be a full-time student in a degree program involved in university research at either the senior the senior undergraduate or graduate level
- no later than May 27, submit a proposal for a poster using the submission website at http://sss.confex.com/sss/2008/cfp.cgi
- no later than May 31, complete a registration in the conference using the on-line registration site at http://www.system-safety.org/~issc2008/registration.php
- no later than May 31, send an email message to bursary "at" issc08.org asking to be considered for a bursary (including the three attachments specified below)
- as an attachment to the above email, submit a CV (or alternatively, a summary of the student's education and work experience)
- as an attachment to the above email, provide a brief letter or memorandum from the student's supervisor or department head confirming the full-time status of the student in a degree program
- as an attachment to the above email, submit a brief statement of purpose(300 words or less) that explains the student's interest in this conference and, more generally, the discipline of system safety
- no later than June 4, send a draft version of their poster in either PDF or MS/Powerpoint format to bursary "at" issc08.org
Bursaries will be awarded to eligible students partially on the basis of the relevance and quality of the (draft version of the) poster that they have sent to bursary "at issc08.org on or before June 4. The statement of purpose will also be considered in making this decision.
Applicants should visit http://www.swarthmore.edu/NatSci/cpurrin1/posteradvice.htm for advice on preparing a poster for a scientific conference. As well, applicants are strongly encouraged to interact with the Poster Chair, Mr. Jim Ronback posters "at" issc08.org well in advance of June 4 to obtain early feedback on their poster.
Any student who is the author or co-author of a paper accepted for presentation at the conference is also invited to apply for a bursary. If the student is not the sole author of the paper, then the student's application for a bursary should highlight their personal contribution to the paper. If a student is applying for a bursary on the basis of an accepted paper, a poster proposal is not necessary. However, we strongly encourage all student participants to prepare a poster for the conference as an opportunity to create interest in their work, generate feedback and possibly even stimulate some future career opportunities.
All eligible applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application no later than June 10.
The bursary will be provided in the form of a reimbursement for airfare, ground transportation, conference registration fee and accommodation following the conference - up to a maximum of $1500 Canadian dollars. To receive this reimbursement, the student must submit a claim for reimbursement no later than September 15, 2008 including copies of receipts. The payment will be paid in Canadian funds with a cheque from a Canadian bank account.
The names of students selected for these bursaries - along with contact information and a summary of their education will be shared with industry sponsors of this bursary.
